Quercetin for Endometriosis: What the Research Really Shows

This article is part of: Endometriosis: Symptoms, Causes, and What Really Helps

Quercetin is one of the most exciting plant compounds in endometriosis research. In the lab, it works on multiple levels, and initial human studies are encouraging. What the research truly shows.

Key takeaways

In laboratory settings, quercetin targets several mechanisms involved in endometriosis: it inhibits cell growth and inflammation and promotes the death of hyperactive cells. Initial human studies with a combination of quercetin, turmeric, and NAC show a significant reduction in pain. The data is encouraging but still small and uncontrolled, and larger studies are pending. Quercetin is found in Cycle+, and curcumin and NAC are in Hormonic Base, neither of which is explicitly a treatment for endometriosis.

Quercetin is one of the most exciting plant compounds in current endometriosis research. In the lab, it targets precisely those processes that drive endometriosis, and initial human studies are yielding encouraging results. We'll show you what research has found so far.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Because currently available therapies alleviate symptoms but hardly halt the progression, researchers and those affected are seeking complementary approaches. Quercetin is one of the most studied candidates, and for good reason: it acts on several levels that are dysregulated in endometriosis.

Why quercetin is being so intensely researched

The scientific background is remarkably broad. In cell and animal studies, quercetin simultaneously targets several mechanisms typical of endometriosis. It inhibits the proliferation of endometriosis cells, selectively induces programmed cell death, and dampens central inflammatory and growth signals such as the NF-κB signaling pathway and the ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and AKT pathways.²

In an animal model, quercetin reduced the size of endometriotic lesions and lowered the activity of the cell cycle gene Cyclin D1, a key switch for uncontrolled cell growth.² A more recent paper from 2024 also describes a so-called senolytic effect: quercetin selectively removes aging, dysfunctional cells, which are particularly abundant in endometriosis, and thereby stabilizes the protective protein p53.³

This combination of anti-inflammatory, anti-growth, and senolytic effects makes quercetin one of the most mechanistically convincing plant compounds in this field. The exciting question is: Does this also work in humans?

What human research shows

And this is where it gets interesting: Unlike many plant compounds, there have already been initial studies on quercetin in endometriosis in affected women, and the results are encouraging.

A combination of quercetin, turmeric, and NAC

In a widely acclaimed study (Fadin and colleagues, 2020), 33 women with confirmed endometriosis took a daily combination of quercetin, turmeric extract, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for two months. The result: pain significantly decreased. Lower abdominal pain decreased by around 37 percent, menstrual pain by about 45 percent, and pain during intercourse by almost 48 percent. Many participants were also able to reduce or completely stop their pain medication, without significant side effects. The combination of the three active ingredients is also found in Hormonic Base.

Quercetin and inflammatory messengers

Another study in endometriosis patients showed that a quercetin-containing combination significantly reduced symptoms on a pain scale compared to a control group. At the same time, two inflammation and disease-relevant markers in the blood decreased: prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a central pain and inflammatory messenger, and CA-125, a value often elevated in endometriosis.⁴

This is supported by a meta-analysis from 2023: targeted supplementation with antioxidant micronutrients could reduce menstrual pain, pain during sex, and lower abdominal pain in endometriosis, and improve quality of life.⁵

How reliable is this already?

As encouraging as these results are, honesty remains important: these are small, early studies, mostly with combination preparations and without large placebo-controlled comparison groups. A direct effect of quercetin alone on the size of endometriotic lesions has not yet been conclusively proven in humans.⁶ The direction of research is promising, but larger controlled studies are still pending. Quercetin is therefore a promising research candidate, not an approved drug.

Cycle+ Formula with Quercetin

Cycle+ contains quercetin as one of several herbal ingredients, alongside myo-inositol, rhodiola, and others. The formula is intended as general cycle support and is expressly not a treatment for endometriosis.

Why the combination is so interesting

What is striking about the human studies is that quercetin was rarely used alone, but rather in combination with turmeric (curcumin) and NAC. This makes biological sense, as the three substances act at different, complementary points in the inflammation cascade.

  • Quercetinaccording to some clinical studies, inhibits cell proliferation and inflammatory signals and, according to researchers, promotes the cell death of overactive cells.
  • Curcuminfrom turmeric blocks the NF-κB signaling pathway, a master switch for inflammation, in the laboratory, and also lowered CA-125 and PGE2 in human studies.
  • NACis an antioxidant and is being investigated as a gentle, well-tolerated approach for endometriosis.

Precisely this triple combination is behind the encouraging pain results of the research. If you want to replicate this in everyday life, you will find the building blocks in our formulas: quercetin in Cycle+, curcumin and NAC in Hormonic Base. Both combined result in the Hormonic Cycle Bundle (Learn more).

How you can interpret this for yourself

Quercetin is an exciting research candidate with initial encouraging data, but not a proven medication. If you want to take action yourself, the bigger picture counts more than a single substance:

  • Quercetin is naturally found in onions, apples, berries, and green vegetables. A plant-rich diet provides it incidentally.
  • A low-inflammatory diet with plenty of vegetables, legumes, and good fat sources is a more solid basis than a single substance.
  • A good supply of micronutrients such as zinc, selenium, and vitamin D supports basic bodily functions.
  • Exercise, sleep, and stress regulation demonstrably influence pain perception.
  • In cases of severe or increasing symptoms, medical supervision is the most important step, not the next supplement.

High-dose quercetin preparations are different from quercetin from the diet. If you are considering a supplement, it is best to discuss it with a doctor, especially if you are taking medication.

When to seek medical help

Seek medical attention if your period pain restricts your daily life, if you experience pain during sex, bowel movements, or outside your period, or if you are unable to conceive. Endometriosis requires specialist medical care. A plant compound like quercetin cannot replace this, but it can accompany a healthy lifestyle.

Conclusion

Quercetin is one of the most promising plant compounds in endometriosis research. In the lab, it inhibits the growth of endometriosis cells, promotes their cell death, and has anti-inflammatory effects via multiple signaling pathways, sometimes even specifically targeting aging cells. And unlike many other compounds, initial studies have already been conducted on affected women, in which a combination of quercetin, turmeric, and NAC significantly reduced pain.

These results are encouraging. At the same time, the studies so far are small and mostly without large control groups; larger clinical studies still need to confirm the findings. Quercetin is thus a promising companion, but not a substitute for diagnosis and medical treatment. If you suffer from endometriosis, good specialist medical care is the most effective path, and a conscious lifestyle with a plant-rich diet can usefully complement it. Frequently Asked Questions about Quercetin and Endometriosis

Does quercetin help with endometriosis?

Initial human studies are encouraging. In a study involving 33 women, a combination of quercetin, curcumin, and NAC significantly reduced endometriosis pain (Fadin 2020). In the lab, quercetin also inhibits cell growth and inflammation. However, human studies are still small and mostly lack large control groups, so a confirmed benefit has not yet been conclusively proven. Quercetin is not an approved drug for endometriosis.

Which foods contain quercetin?

Quercetin is naturally found mainly in onions, apples, berries, capers, and green vegetables. Those who eat a plant-rich diet naturally absorb quercetin through their food.

Was bedeutet senolytisch?
