In my consultations, I often meet women who have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, and almost always they bring the same question: Should I take selenium now? I quickly realize that the question is actually broader. Because selenium is much more than a thyroid issue; it is also central to your immune defense and the protection of your cells. That's precisely why it's worth taking an honest, slightly broader look, without hype, but also without downplaying selenium's genuine strengths.

Selenium is an essential trace element that the body cannot produce itself and therefore needs daily through food. No organ contains as much selenium per gram as the thyroid, but the body uses it in many places, from immune cells to hair roots. If it is lacking, it often subtly manifests in several areas.

Soils in Germany and large parts of Europe are low in selenium, which means that food here provides less selenium than, for example, in the USA. The average intake in our country is often below the reference value, which is why selenium deficiency is more common here than many people think.

What Selenium Does in the Body

Selenium does not act directly, but as a component of special enzymes, the so-called selenoproteins. Two groups are particularly important. Deiodinases convert the rather inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active T3, which actually works in the body. Glutathione peroxidases protect your cells from oxidative stress and simultaneously keep the immune system strong. Through these enzymes, selenium's effects extend far beyond the thyroid.

All four statements are officially approved by EFSA. This is more than many think: unlike some advertised substances, you can seriously link selenium with the thyroid, immune system, cell protection, and even with hair and nails. This very diversity makes a deficiency so unpleasant, because it is rarely noticeable in only one place.

Why Selenium Deficiency is Common in Women

Because our soils contain little selenium, the supply strongly depends on what and how much you eat. Good sources are mainly animal products and Brazil nuts, while the selenium content of vegetables and grains varies greatly depending on the growing region. Therefore, some women slip into an undersupply without realizing it.

Women with a purely plant-based or predominantly plant-based diet, women with Hashimoto's or other autoimmune thyroid diseases, pregnant and breastfeeding women with higher needs, and women with chronic gastrointestinal diseases who absorb nutrients poorly have an increased risk. In these groups, a second look is particularly worthwhile.

Why it's worth compensating for a deficiency

This is the real core issue, often overlooked in many guidebooks: The benefits of selenium are greatest when you actually have too little. If your reserves are well-filled, additional selenium provides little benefit. However, if there is a real deficiency, you close several gaps at once, because selenium is involved in so many processes.

In practical terms, this means: compensation supports the enzymes that activate your thyroid hormones, it strengthens the antioxidant defense that protects your cells from oxidative stress, and it contributes to a normal function of the immune system, which is particularly challenged during infection seasons and with an autoimmune disease. No single one of these effects is a miracle cure, but together they form a solid foundation that falters when selenium is missing.

The honest limit remains important: Selenium is not a medication and does not replace medical therapy; it ensures that the basic supply is correct. That is precisely why the smart approach is to know your own status and specifically compensate for a proven deficiency, rather than supplementing blindly. Selenium and the thyroid, especially with Hashimoto's

Selenium is most discussed in relation to Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause of an underactive thyroid. And here, there is indeed reliable data: A large meta-analysis from 2024 of 35 randomized studies observed that selenium can lower thyroid antibodies (TPO antibodies). However, an honest assessment is crucial, and it is missing in almost all guidebooks: The benefit was observed primarily in women who had a selenium deficiency and were not yet taking thyroid hormones. While selenium lowers antibodies, it is not definitively proven whether this improves the long-term course of the disease or well-being; a large study with quality of life as an endpoint found no corresponding advantage. Thus, selenium does not cure Hashimoto's, but it can usefully supplement therapy in case of a deficiency.

These enzymes neutralize aggressive oxygen compounds that arise during metabolism, inflammation, and infections, thereby protecting cells and tissues from damage.

Precisely this cell protection is also the reason why selenium is needed for a strong immune system. Immune cells operate under high oxidative stress, and a good selenium status helps them to remain functional. Both cell protection and immune function are recognized by the EFSA, and both are the first to suffer when selenium becomes scarce, often long before the thyroid gland shows any signs.

Brazil nuts or supplement? Dosage and the important upper limit

Many want to meet their needs through Brazil nuts, and fundamentally, that is a good source. The catch: The selenium content of a single Brazil nut varies enormously, depending on its origin, from a few to well over a hundred micrograms. With a handful of nuts, you are therefore guessing your dose rather than knowing it, and can quickly get too little or significantly too much.

For orientation: The DGE's reference intake for women is 60 µg per day; in studies, typically 100 to 200 µg were used. The upper limit is equally important. The EFSA has set the tolerable upper intake level at 255 µg per day. Consistently more can lead to selenium overload, an early sign of which is precisely hair loss, followed by brittle nails, garlic-like bad breath, and gastrointestinal complaints. For selenium, therefore, it particularly applies: more is not better; a defined, moderate amount is the safe way.
