Capsule, gum, patch, spray, or powder: which form is best?

Capsule, gummy, patch, spray, powder, or drops? The forms of dietary supplements are becoming increasingly creative. Now there are patches for the tongue, transdermal patches, or delicious gummies that are supposed to provide you with vitamins and plant compounds. But do they work? This article honestly and scientifically compares the different forms so you know what really matters.

The most important points in brief

  • For most nutrients, no form is better absorbed than a well-made capsule.
  • What matters is not marketing slogans, but an exact dose, bioavailability, stability, and that you reliably take the preparation.
  • Vitamin patches are the one form that science does not support: very little of most active ingredients is absorbed through the skin.
  • Gummies taste good but can often only carry low doses and are frequently full of additives and sugar.
  • Powder excels with high doses, while effervescent tablets come with a lot of sodium.

When I compared the studies on the various dosage forms for Hormonic, one thing in particular surprised me: how much good marketing campaigns can deceive customers. Supplement patches (also known simply as patches), sprays, and colorful gummies often promise a strong effect and better absorption, but the evidence for this is usually thin.

What really counts is less spectacular: the correct chemical form of the nutrient, the appropriate dose, combination with a meal for fat-soluble vitamins, and that you actually take the preparation regularly. Let's go through the forms one by one.

The most important finding first

For the vast majority of people, no format is systematically better absorbed than a well-formulated capsule. Whether water-soluble vitamins like C or B12 come from a capsule, a spray, or a gummy generally makes little difference to blood levels. More important than the shell are the nutrient itself, the dose, and the context of intake.

Legally, too, the health claims approved by the European authority EFSA always refer to the nutrient and the necessary quantity, not the dosage form. A statement like "Vitamin D contributes to normal immune function" applies equally to capsules, drops, or sprays, as long as the form delivers the promised amount. A form cannot therefore advertise with better efficacy without proving it. This is a problem. Because imagine the nutrient is applied to the skin, but is not absorbed through the skin at all. The company would still be allowed to advertise with the slogan "contributes to normal immune function." But wait a minute – how is that supposed to work if nothing of it gets through the skin?

Let's compare the different dosage forms.

Capsules and tablets: the benchmark

Capsules and tablets are the reference for good reason. They can be precisely and reproducibly dosed, can also contain bulky minerals like magnesium, iron, or calcium, as well as higher amounts, and are well protected from moisture and light, making them stable for a long time. In addition, different capsule shells can be chosen if active ingredients need to reach the intestine. For a combination product with many micronutrients, the capsule is therefore almost unbeatable.

It's fair to say, however, that not every tablet or capsule is automatically good. Poorly pressed tablets can dissolve too slowly and then release less, which is why there are quality standards for disintegration and dissolution. Conversely, rapid dissolution does not automatically mean better absorption. Furthermore, cheap forms can be used (such as magnesium oxide instead of higher-quality magnesium forms like bisglycinate), which affects the efficacy. And the disadvantage remains: some people cannot or do not want to swallow capsules, and that is precisely why the other forms exist.

Gummies: tasty, but imprecise and full of sugar

Vitamin gummies are popular because they taste good. Their problem is not absorption, but precision: the actual dose fluctuates more than with capsules, sensitive nutrients degrade in the soft, sugary gum over their shelf life, some active ingredients lose their efficacy entirely, and minerals can hardly be incorporated in meaningful quantities. In addition, a gummy without sugar, gelling agents, and colorants simply doesn't work. Patches: the form not supported by science

Vitamin patches are the latest hype, be it for NAC, berberine, or vitamin B12, but here the scientific evidence is clearly inconvenient. Most vitamins, especially the large B12 molecule, do not overcome the intact skin barrier in relevant quantities. There are several reasons for this. For one, the stratum corneum is designed to protect the body from the penetration of foreign substances. Transdermal systems (like real nicotine or hormone patches) require special, mostly prescription-only excipients for the active ingredients to even reach the bloodstream. In addition, vitamins in isolated form often have too large a molecular structure and are water-soluble rather than fat-soluble. The latter is also necessary for them to penetrate the skin at all.

There are no official statements from health authorities such as the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) or the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) confirming absorption and efficacy, and vitamin patches are generally not legally considered approved medicinal products or food supplements, as the criteria (e.g., ingestion/swallowing) of EU directives are not met. Sprays and sublingual forms: good for B12, otherwise overestimated

Sprays and drops under the tongue are often advertised as being particularly fast and better absorbed. For vitamin B12, it is at least true that the sublingual form works just as well as the tablet. A large review from 2025 found no significant difference in B12 levels between oral, sublingual, and injected administration. However, "just as good" does not mean superior.

For vitamin D, a mouth spray is at best comparable to a capsule, not clearly better. For most other vitamins, the claim that significantly more is absorbed sublingually is hardly scientifically supported. And for a spray to taste pleasant, flavorings and sweeteners are usually added. Practically, sprays can be useful if swallowing is difficult, but an efficacy advantage has not been proven.

Powder: strong in high doses, but rarely pure

Powder shows its strength where large quantities are involved that do not fit into a capsule. For active ingredients in the gram range such as collagen, protein, amino acids, fiber or electrolytes, powder is often the most practical form. To put that into capsules, you would have to swallow many capsules daily. The converse: A collagen product where you only have to take 2 capsules a day simply cannot have a strong dosage, as the powder has much more volume.

The downside becomes apparent when looking at the ingredient list: Many active ingredients taste bitter or metallic when pure, and a powder should dissolve well and not clump. Therefore, most powders also contain flavorings, sweeteners and anti-caking agents such as silicon dioxide. Exactly what you don't need in a capsule. In addition, dosing with a spoon is less precise than a pressed tablet, and some active ingredients are less stable in dissolved form, which is why they should be prepared fresh.

Drops and liquid forms: flexibly dosable

Liquid forms and drops can be dosed very precisely and are ideal for children or people who cannot swallow capsules. Vitamin D3 in oil is well absorbed as drops, because the fat-soluble vitamin benefits from the oil carrier. The disadvantages: Once opened, liquid forms are more sensitive to light and oxygen and therefore have a shorter shelf life, and often preservatives or flavorings are necessary to make them durable and palatable.

Effervescent tablets: practical, but beware of sodium

Effervescent tablets dissolve quickly and many find them pleasant. Their underestimated disadvantage is sodium: the effervescent effect is created by sodium compounds, so a daily effervescent tablet contributes significantly to salt intake. A large evaluation with over a million people linked sodium-containing effervescent preparations with a higher risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events.

In addition, there are acids, sweeteners and often sugar to make the drink taste pleasant. For occasional use, this is unproblematic. As a daily long-term solution, especially with high blood pressure, the effervescent form is not ideal.

Conclusion: The capsule wins; everything else has special use cases

Ultimately, the best dosage form is the one you take regularly and at the correct dose. For a daily micronutrient foundation, that's the capsule, and by a long shot. It provides precise dosing, is stable, can also carry minerals, and does without sugar, flavors, or anti-caking agents, which gummies, powders, sprays, and effervescent tablets need to taste good. Less filler, more active ingredient.

This doesn't mean that the other forms are bad; they are made for special use cases: powders for high doses like creatine or collagen, drops for children and vitamin D, sprays for swallowing difficulties. You can, however, skip forms that primarily advertise convenience or supposedly better absorption without proof, especially patches. Don't be swayed by the packaging, but by the nutrient, the dose, and the quality behind it.

What is the best form of food supplement?

For a daily micronutrient foundation, capsules are the best choice: they provide precise dosing, are stable, can also carry minerals, and do not require sugar, flavorings, or flow agents that other forms need. No format is better absorbed for most nutrients than a well-made capsule. Other forms are useful for special cases: powders for high doses, drops for children or vitamin D, sprays for swallowing difficulties.

Are vitamin patches absorbed by the body?

There is no convincing scientific basis for this. Most vitamins, especially the large B12 molecule, hardly penetrate intact skin. In the limited human research available, patches performed worse than tablets. Therefore, vitamin patches are generally not recommended.

Sind Sprays oder sublinguale Tropfen besser als Tabletten?
