Vitamin D is the sun hormone that your body primarily produces through the skin. A deficiency is widespread in Germany. This article shows what vitamin D deficiency symptoms women have, how you can determine your status, and when vitamin D really helps.

As someone who was actively involved in supplement research and reads studies daily for Hormonic, I deal a lot with nutrients. Hardly any are discussed as passionately as Vitamin D. For some, it's a miracle cure, for others just a hype. The truth, as is often the case, lies somewhere in between and is surprisingly practical: Vitamin D is important, a deficiency is widespread here, but additional Vitamin D primarily helps those who have too little. That's exactly what I want to contextualize here from a female perspective.

Strictly speaking, Vitamin D is not a classic vitamin, but a hormone that the body produces itself in the skin under sunlight. We absorb only a small part through food. It regulates calcium and bone metabolism and is involved in almost all tissues, including the immune system.

What Vitamin D does in the female body

Vitamin D acts like a hormone and influences many processes. For the female body, the following EFSA-approved functions are particularly relevant, and they also show what you can legitimately say about Vitamin D:

Bones, in particular, are important for women in the long term, as estrogen levels decline after menopause, so bone protection also decreases, and good vitamin D and calcium intake become particularly relevant then.

Vitamin D deficiency: Symptoms and risk groups

The insidious thing about vitamin D deficiency is that it often manifests silently for a long time with non-specific symptoms. Typical signs in women include persistent fatigue and exhaustion, muscle weakness, muscle and bone pain, increased susceptibility to infection, and sometimes increased hair loss. Because many of these symptoms can also have other causes, intuition alone is not sufficient for a diagnosis; it is worth checking blood levels.

Women who get little daylight, have darker or predominantly covered skin, are older, have a higher body weight, or are pregnant or breastfeeding are particularly at risk. With higher body weight, levels are often lower because vitamin D is stored in fatty tissue, which can increase the requirement.

How to detect a deficiency

Only a blood test, the so-called 25-OH-D value, provides certainty. A value below 30 nmol/l (below 12 ng/ml) is considered deficient, and a value of 50 nmol/l (20 ng/ml) or higher is considered sufficient. Over-the-counter rapid tests for home use are considered unreliable; a laboratory value is more meaningful. Hormonic Base: Vitamin D3 + Magnesium + 12 Additional Active Ingredients

Vitamin D3 is one of 16 active ingredients in Hormonic Base. It contributes to the normal function of the immune system, the maintenance of normal bones, and normal muscle function. The practical aspect: Base provides D3 together with magnesium, which the body needs to activate vitamin D, in a moderate, everyday dose instead of high single doses.

When Vitamin D really helps, and when it doesn't

Honesty is important here, because this is precisely where many guides fall short. The benefit of vitamin D strongly depends on whether there is actually a deficiency. In the case of a genuine deficiency, vitamin D has been proven to support bones, muscles, and the immune system, and in combination with calcium, it can reduce the risk of fractures in at-risk groups, which is particularly relevant after menopause. A large analysis of 37 studies also found a small protective effect against acute respiratory infections, most likely with daily intake and low baseline levels.

Conversely, those who are already well-supplied benefit little from additional vitamin D. The large VITAL study with over 25,000 participants, who were not selected based on deficiency, found no benefit for cancer, cardiovascular events, or bone fractures. Vitamin D is therefore not a miracle cure for everyone, but is particularly useful where a gap exists.

Dosage, Magnesium, and Safety

The DGE recommends 20 µg per day, or 800 International Units (IU), as a guideline if the body does not produce its own vitamin D through sunlight. Common preparations range between 800 and 2,000 IU daily. An often-overlooked point is important: the body needs magnesiumto activate vitamin D at all. Regarding dosage, it is clear: more does not help more. Continuously very high amounts above 100 µg per day can lead to an overdose with elevated calcium in the blood, with risks for kidneys and heart. Highly dosed shock therapies are also usually not the better way. A moderate, daily dose is more sensible than rare megadoses.

Sun and Nutrition

The body produces most of it itself through the skin when enough UVB light is available. However, from October to March, the sun in Germany is usually not sufficient for this, which is why many women have low levels in late winter. Through diet, fatty fish, eggs, and mushrooms contribute somewhat, but they rarely cover the needs alone.
