Strength training: Not for the calories burned, but for the muscles

Here, scientific honesty is worthwhile. Several systematic reviews show that exercise, especially a combination of endurance and strength, does not reliably raise the basal metabolic rate significantly. The often-promised afterburn effect is considerably smaller than advertising suggests.

The actual value of strength training lies elsewhere, and it is well-documented: It builds and maintains muscle mass, lowers body fat percentage, and improves body composition. A meta-analysis of postmenopausal women found that strength training primarily benefits muscle mass, while endurance training has a stronger effect on fat mass. This is crucial for midlife, as muscle mass slowly begins to decline without counteraction from around the age of 30.

Myths you can safely discard

Many popular tips do not stand up to evidence. There is little reliable evidence that many small meals boost metabolism more than three balanced ones. Also, the difference between a "fast" and "slow" metabolism is usually small in people with similar body data. And the idea that metabolism can "fall asleep" and needs to be woken up with home remedies is physiologically untenable.

What really happens with strict diets: The body adapts, the urge to move decreases, and with every lost pound, energy requirements also decrease. This is not a punishment from your metabolism, but an expected adaptation that you can cushion with protein, strength training, and patience.
