Who is the perimenopause consultation for?
Perimenopause (the transition phase before your final period, during which hormone levels fluctuate) begins for most women between their early and mid-40s.
When this consultation is not suitable: Before the age of 40, in case of bleeding after menopause (twelve months without a period), and in case of very heavy bleeding, you should seek an in-person assessment at a practice first. For acute symptoms, heavy bleeding, abdominal pain, or a mental health crisis, please contact the on-call medical service at 116 117, or in an emergency, call 112.

All medical services are billed according to the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ). You will receive an invoice to submit to your health insurance or supplementary insurance provider. Is a blood test necessary for perimenopause?
Usually not. The British NICE guideline recommends diagnosing perimenopause in women over 45 with typical symptoms without a blood test. Between 40 and 45, an FSH test (FSH is the follicle-stimulating hormone) may be useful in individual cases; it is not meaningful if you are on the pill. The doctor will first clarify whether lab results would contribute to the assessment.
What does the doctor discuss during the perimenopause consultation?
- Whether your age, cycle, and symptoms align with perimenopause or if other causes, such as the thyroid, should be investigated.
- Whether and which lab values are useful and how to interpret existing results.
